I wonder why the Senate candidates from my great state of California don’t threaten to block raising the debt ceiling unless a companion bill to permanently eliminate the debt ceiling is attached. Seems like it would be a justified use for holding the economy hostage.
Biden dismissed calls for abolishing debt limit in 2022. A disappointing absence of leadership.
I agree that the debt ceiling should be repealed. Is this a bill that can pass the Senate with a simple majority or does it have to overcome a filibuster?
interesting. I think politicians have too much fun vilifying the other side over the ceiling to ever consider repealing it!
Hi John. Thanks for your interest. This article implies that repeal could be filibustered:
https://www.vox.com/2021/12/8/22820451/debt-ceiling-filibuster
But it also implies that the Senate could vote to eliminate a filibuster simply for one vote: to repeal a filibuster!
Which illustrates well that the filibuster rules are attempts to “tie one’s own hands,” which ain’t easy!
All the best,
jeff
