The Biden administration recently issued an executive order regulating artificial intelligence. This partially reflects fear that AI will cause mass unemployment. Such concern, however, is only the latest instance of misplaced fears surrounding technological change.
New technologies and other big sudden changes (e.g. immigration, offshoring, regulation) can *disrupt*. The disrupted, especially if they are older, may have trouble adapting (e.g. retraining, moving to where the new jobs are). They deserve sympathy, and maybe assistance (in addition to the standard entitlements), but not protection.
